Stigma/ Noam

My name is Noam, 36 years old, a member of Alon Clubhouse in Tiberius and a member of its founding team. My story starts with my childhood in Haifa.

When I was in elementary school I suffered from social difficulties. As I transitioned to middle school I chose to run away from my issues and hang out with “The bad kids” – something that gave my (fake) feelings of power and strength. Still the "elite" kids of the Carmel rejected me, and I was forced to drop out of school. I was hospitalized at the age of 17 for rage outbursts and several failed suicide attempts (Today, I get to say, I'm happy they failed).

I was hospitalized after a particularly difficult outburst. I begged my dear parents who also suffered from my situation, for help and they brought me to a place I later learned was a closed psychiatric ward. I had a really hard time away from home, especially away from Brandy -my beloved dog, G-d bless his soul. I suffered pain I wish on nobody, over two years of hospitalizations and difficult ordeals.

Then I reached Tiberius, where the recovery process really began.  Moving to a supportive community in Tiberius was good for me, and I felt like I arrived at the right place. Still, ever since I became ill, I was constantly accompanied by the feeling that the world around me blames, judges and disowns me. That the right to live like an equal man around others has been taken from me. As time went on, I started slowly believing that I really am different, that something really is wrong with me, and that maybe I am not really worthy of that right. Whether it was on the street in Tiberius, at a coffee shop with a date or at the waiting line for the doctor – I always felt like I'm different from others. I constantly anticipated that somebody would point at me and reveal the horrible secret that I have been trying so hard to hide. Once I'd be revealed I would be removed from the group, outside, alone. Do you know how many times I started acting strangely in the middle of the street just because of the stress of someone finding out? And in the end, I really found myself acting like a crazy person, really giving them a reason to point at me. But during that time I had discovered something interesting: I noticed that together with my personal stigma and shame, I felt resentful for the injustice I felt directed towards me. I felt like things should be different, and that I deserve to be treated fairly and equally – by society, and my caretakers. I didn’t do anything bad to anyone and even if sometimes I don't feel very well, there is no reason I shouldn't be treated respectfully, as a 30+ year-old man, and make my own decisions about my life and live equally around other equals. One day, a team from Clubhouse Nazareth Illit arrived at the supportive community center in Tiberius. They came to Tiberius to bring the news – a Clubhouse in Tiberius would be built by the people, not just for the people. I was amazed to hear the members from Clubhouse Nazareth Illit speaking my thoughts about equality, partnership and dissolving hierarchy out loud.

From the get go it was obvious to me that I would join the founding team and be a part of the stirring wheel of the project. I wanted to be in a position where I'll have influence. I wanted to be part of the decision-making. I want to regain the feeling of control and meaning to my life. When I heard there's something like that in Clubhouse – I was hooked. I said: "BINGO! This is the place for me." I joined the founding team and found myself learning, trying, checking, arguing, asking, testing… and constantly growing. I remember after about two months of being in the founding team, the supportive community went to a vacation in the city of Nahariya. We were eating dinner at the hotel and I saw the staff team have orange juice and the community residents have water, and suddenly my eyes were opened; I got up and asked the manager "excuse me, why do you have juice and we have water?" the manager looked at me, stunned. At first, she was silent but then she said: "I don't know. Noam, you're so right. I really don't know. That is just how it is. I never thought about it. I'll make sure you have juice on your table. And thank you so much for helping me see things. It is apparent the Clubhouse is having a good effect on you." It really was a good feeling. I was a bit worried she'll be mad at me, but I couldn't help it. As soon as you're exposed to Clubhouse ideas – you can't go back.

As time passed I have grown and matured. But I have to tell you, I was such a sucker then. Because if I was facing the same situation today, I would've skipped to juice thing and go straight for the separate tables. What is that? A caretakers table and residents table? Today I would've probably invited the team to sit next to me and give them the right to enjoy my company 🙂

Yes… I have grown a lot in Clubhouse. I learned how to be a fuller person with a broad identity that reaches beyond the sickness and the stigma that comes with it. At Clubhouse I got help and support from friends that encouraged me to be a part of something bigger. I realized I'm not alone and that I'm on the right way to recovery. The daily activities in Clubhouse also helped me, and as Clubhouse was growing, I started to feel a new wind breathing my way.

About two years ago, with Clubhouse mediation, I started working in the "Parent Patrol" in Tiberius. I'm also working with at risk youth – boys and girls that walk around the streets and are in need of guidance, somebody to listen, and somebody to believe in them and tell them that they're worthy!

I love this job. I help people, and I feel like I have a lot to give, from my heart and my experience.

Thank you for reading, love, your brother Noam.
